- Jakob OPPENHEIMER. Mark BERNKOPF (b. 1962) writes:
My paternal grandmother, Gertrude OPPENHEIMER BERNKOPF
(1895-1993) hailed from
Bruchsal, in what I believe was the Grand Duchy of Baden. Her father was named
Jakob OPPENHEIMER, who lived c. 1860-1936. A jolly, full-bellied southern
German, he seems to have enjoyed his fair share of sausage, schnitzel and beer.
My grandmother's family was once in banking; by the late 19th and early 20th
centuries, the OPPENHEIMERs of Bruchsal owned and operated a textile factory.
For several generations, my branch of the OPPENHEIMERs lived in what is now
Baden-Württemberg. And, yes, the MaHaRal was counted as a family forebear.
One ancestor, Joseph Süß Oppenheimer
(b. 1698 Heidelberg, d. 1738 Stuttgart), served as Finance
Minister to the sovereign of Württemberg, Duke Karl Alexander and was then hanged in a cage, with
his body left to rot, after the death of the old ruler and the accession of the
old ruler's son. This was c. 1740. The Jud Süß's unpopularity had something
to do with imposing a tax on card-playing. He became the subject of a novel
written by Leon FEUCHTWANGER, and of an anti-semitic film made by the Nazis.
Even earlier, c. 1683, an OPPENHEIMER lent the family fortune to the Holy Roman
Emperor to be used to defend Vienna against the Turks. The Emperor's efforts
was successful, but he either refused or was unable to repay the loan, wiping
out the OPPENHEIMER family fortune.
Joseph Süß Oppenheimer was
the nephew of Samuel OPPENHEIMER.
Joseph Süß Oppenheimer was
shtadlan to
Kaiser Leopold of Austria.
In the late 18th century, by which time the family banking house managed to
recoup something of a very small fortune, the head of the firm employed a
young fellow named Mayer Amschel von ROTHSCHILD. Eventually the latter went into
banking on his own, and started the great European banking dynasty.
These are all tales that I heard from my late grandmother. I have no
documentation for any of them, except I seem to remember that the Jud Suess
story was discussed in a 1962 or 1963 issue of the Jewish Digest, an
English-language publication probably published in the States.
I have read that the MaHaRel corresponded with the astronomer Tycho Brahe, and
that the old rabbi was interested in astronomy and mathematics. However,
apparently because of misinformation or misunderstanding about the rabbi's
interest in the Kabbala, the old man's interest in astronomy became
transmogrified into an interest in astrology. And, of course, somehow the old
golem tale was conjured up.

- Amalia OPPENHEIMER (b. 25 Nov. 1852 Schluchtern, near
Frankfurt on the Main, Germany, d. 1 April 1939 Deadwood, buried Mt. Moriah
Cem., Deadwood) married (15 Feb. 1874 Denver) Nathan COLMAN (d. 4 Jun. 1906, buried
Mt. Moriah Cem.).
The first seventeen
years of her life were spent in the small town of Schluchtern. Following the
death of her Mother, she came to the United States to visit relatives in
Baltimore, Maryland. After a short stay in Baltimore, she made the long trip
across the United States, to Denver, Colorado, where she had relatives. In
Denver, she met Nathan Col, also a German-Jewish immigrant, and on
February 15, 1874, they were married.
When the gold rush to the Black Hills began in 1876, Mr. COLMAN decided to
join the many settlers in the new Territory of Dakota, and on February 8th,
1877, he arrived in Deadwood, where he was to spend the remaining years of
his life. By April of the same year, Mr. COLMAN had prepared a home for his
family who had remained in Denver, and early in that month of 1877, Mrs.
COLMAN and small daughter made the long, hazardous trip by stage coach to
join her husband in Deadwood, Dakota Territory. The stage coach trip was made
by way of Sidney, Nebraska. Bands of marauding Indians frequently attacked
the stage coaches in those early days, and on the day of Mrs. COLMAN's
arrival in Deadwood, a delay in schedule gave rise to the rumor that the
stage had been attacked, so many anxious moments were spent by Mr. COLMAN and
others who awaited its arrival.
The life of the Pioneer family was a difficult one, and many hardships beset
Mr. and Mrs. COLMAN during these early days in Deadwood. Two sons and four
daughters were born to them here, of whom only three daughters survived. Two
sons and two daughters died in diphtheria epidemics and of other early day
diseases which were difficult to control in those days. In September of the
year 1879, when the town of Deadwood was almost totally destroyed by fire,
Mrs. COLMAN and a little son who was only a few days old, had to be removed
from their home, which was in the path of the fire. Home and business were
wiped out in this fire, and once again, in 1894, the family was to lose both
home and business in a destructive fire.
Mr. COLMAN, a naturalized citizen of the United States, took an active part
in the growth of the community. In 1878 he was appointed Postmaster for a
small precinct known as Beaver, adjacent to Deadwood. He acted as one of the
Judges of the Territorial Election held in the year 1889, when South Dakota
became a State, and was several times a Delegate to State Republican
Conventions thereafter. For many years he was a Justice of the Peace in
Deadwood and leader of the Jewish community in religious observances.

saved the King of Saxony‘s treasure against looting by the Prussians. He hid the gold bullion under a layer of potatoes in a cart which he drove through the Prussian lines.

Germany. Emigrated together to Manchester where he appears on the census returns until
1901. Siegmund was appointed Honorary Vice Consul to Austria and Hungary in
Manchester in 1873 a position held at the same time by Ernest OPPENHEIM (OPPENHEIM bank) in Cologne. This position was previously held by members of
the COHEN and SICHEL family in Manchester and was a position that could only
be approved by the sovereign at the time. This in addition to the
professions of his children, the social status of his friends and the amount
of property they were to own in Lancashire within a very short period of
time, suggest to me that he did not arrive in England, as many other Jewish
immigrants did, and work his way up from a lower profession.
On the first census return in 1871 that he appears on he stated he
was an African Merchant, which suggests he was trading in textiles to
Africa. This trade was highly lucrative in this era of the Industrial
revolution and cotton was imported into England, processed in Manchester,
Bradford and other centers of Textile mills and then exported to Africa and
other nations.
