Jette LEVIS was the daughter of Seligman LEVIS son of Seckel LEVIS from Karlsruhe and Rika ROSENFELD. In 1860 Louis Oppenheimer came to Bruchsal, where he founded the Firma Oppenheimer with the support of his father. See the BAR-OPPENHEIMER Family Collection at the Leo Baeck Institute. This collection by Richard BAR holds the papers of members of the BAR and OPPENHEIMER families from Bruchsal, Germany. It documents the history of the two families as well as the Bär leather distribution company and Oppenheimer woolens factory. Included in this collection are business and personal correspondence, personal papers, financial records, family trees and a few newspaper clippings.

   • [14] Otto OPPENHEIMER (b. 7 Sep. 1875 Bruchsal, d. 8 Feb. 1951 Bronx, New York City) m. (6 May 1901 [or 8 Dec 1903 according to Leo Baeck Institute] Rothweil a N.) Emma WALDER (d. 1970). Otto Oppenheimer served in World War I. After the death of his father he led the Firma Oppenheimer. In 1935 he faced charges of having traded in uniform cloth of the SA (Sturmabteilung), something forbiden for Jews; the charges were later dismissed, but the company began to lose customers. In August 1938 Otto Oppenheimer gave the firm over to his non-Jewish colleague Ernst Franke, and it was renamed the Ernst Franke and Co., GmbH. By German law, Otto officially adopted the name Israel on 17 Aug. 1938. The second name was rescinded by law in absencia on 19 June 1946. Immigrated 12 Dec 1941 on SS Shawnee, Otto and Emma Oppenheimer moved to New York with their daughter Annie and son-in-law Richard Bär, settling in the Bronx.
