- Yossef BERDUGO. Rich trader. President of Jewish community in Meknes 1935-1968.
Joseph BERDUGO was one of the most remarkable figures of the jewish
community in Meknes (20th century). Major grain trader. He was the
president of the community from 1935 to his death in 1968. During his
tenure, the community enjoyed great prosperity, developed its network
of schools, inaugurated the new site of the Rabbinical Tribunal
and the Association of Alliance Alumni (of which he was the
first president in Meknes). During the 50s, he founded the
first synagogue outisde of the Mellah in the European city.
This synagogue carried his name until its recent closure due to
low membership. Secretary of the Council of Jewish Communities of Morocco
(1965).
He played an important role nationally as member of the governement
council during the final years of the protecterate.

of the Wifaq (Judeo-Muslim cooperation). Former director of the Ministry

Since coming to Paris in 1963, he has left public life.

He tried to increase participation of the Jewish community in the national life
and the democratic experience, as well as an opening to the world jewish
community as exemplified by the return of Morocco in 1979 to the
World Jewish Congress.
