I was just talking to [...]
She said she is strong Kerry, but wanted to know more about Specter and Hoeffel.
I told that Spector was 100% NRA and that in my mind meant he thought the money of NRA would win him more votes than he would lose to people who support sensible gun laws and that we had to prove him wrong.
She said I certainly marked a point with that and countered that Specter is Jewish and Specter is a very powerful Senator.
I said (and she agreed) that Hoeffel is a strong supporter of Israel as well.
I said Spector is certainly powerful with his seniority, but the power is not a good thing unless wielded in the right direction.
She countered that Specter can do more for Israel with his seniority than a Freshman Senator, and that Spector takes liberal positions on a variety of issues.
I then weighed in with the following point which pushed her to "barely Hoeffel".
I asked her why the Republicans were so upset at Jeffords for switching parties. Jeffords still votes essentially the same as before. They were upset because lost control of the Senate. The Democrats may take control of the Senate in 2004, but they surely won't if Spector is reelected.
With control of the Senate, Kerry will be able to nominate the cabinet officers and especially Supreme court justices that he want, not just those he is able to live with as a compromise. Moreover, if worst comes to worst and Bush is reelected, a democratic Senate is essential to moderate Bush's mark on the Supreme court and legislation.
It sounds like she is now willing to vote for Hoeffel, but she asked if someone could send her more information about Specter's positions (and record in confirming Bush appointees) and Hoeffel's positions.
